- CallumNovember 5, 2025⭐⭐½ – 2 Lava 2 Lantula! – Hot Lava, Cold Thrills 2 Lava 2 Lantula! is one of those sequels that exists purely because someone, somewhere, thought, “Well, why not?” A follow-up to the already-bonkers Lavalantula, it doubles down on the lava, the spiders, and the self-awareness — though not, unfortunately, on the scares. What should’ve been campy horror-comedy gold ends up as lukewarm schlock that’s fun in the moment but evaporates the instant the credits roll. Steve Guttenberg and Michael Winslow reunite in a nostalgia-charged pairing that will make any Police Academy fan smile, but their charm can’t quite rescue the film from its own molten madness. The tone wobbles somewhere between parody and earnest monster flick, never fully committing to either. The CGI is deliberately awful, the dialogue is gloriously bad, and the “thrills” are as predictable as the explosions are fake — and that’s exactly the problem. There’s a strange sweetness to how hard it tries, though. It’s harmless, good-natured nonsense that never pretends to be more than a B-movie with extra lava poured on top. It’s a “family horror” in the loosest sense — nobody’s really scared, but everyone’s vaguely entertained. In the end, the title’s not wrong: the lava is indeed the hottest thing here. Everything else melts into forgettable, fiery fluff. 🌋 Pairing: A cup of instant hot chocolate — cheap, warm, and comforting in a way that makes you question your standards, but you’ll still finish it anyway.
