While there are a few genuinely touching moments and imaginative uses of phones that keep the suspense lively, the film often moves too fast (or too fuzzily) to clearly track who's who among its crowded cast, and the Chinese names can get lost in the shuffle. CGI efforts look especially rough at times, which undercuts the intensity of the set pieces critics say should be the movie's strong suit. Performances vary from compelling to uneven - some actors ground the emotional backstory better than others - but overall 96 Minutes is more ambitious in concept than it is polished in execution.
