Two New York cops get involved in a gang war between members of the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia. They arrest one of their killers and are ordered to escort him back to Japan. In Japan, however, he manages to escape. As they try to track him down, they get deeper and deeper into the Japanese Mafia scene and they have to learn that they can only win by playing the game the Japanese way.

Lovely neo-noir film that critics don't seem to get. It's beautiful and has an amazing cast.

A classic Ridley Scott/Hans Zimmer production, I'm actually a little surprised they haven't worked together more. Beautiful cinematography and a look at Osaka, Japan. Chemistry between Douglas & Garcia works well. I watched this when it was originally released as a 16 year old and I can remember being blown away at the time, it holds up very well in my opinion, there scenes which may now be deemed inappropriate but it was how times were back then, some of the special effects were a bit ick but again it produced over 30 years ago we didn't have the technology then and the film didn't have the budget either.

This is a movie all about restoring human-gaijin relations. A detective movie filmed on location in Osaka, with Michael Douglas as the lead? Shut up and take my money. This is a lovely period piece oozing with charm and I'm glad to have taken part in it.

Sometimes it is not good to exhume the corpses of the past. A strange 80s racist tract that leaves a bad taste in the mouth, even though it looks gorgeous. Ridley revisits his Blade Runner inspirations for real, but all the Western protagonists are rather vile, and he makes the Japanese counterparts naive and stupid. Grubby.

A classic noir thriller, and one of Ridley Scott's finest, brooding films. Douglas as the cocky, fish out of water using his 'questionable street nouse', Garcia's innocent and naive younger partner, come up against the 'straight by the book' Japanese honour system in policing. This is one to watch before you die, and should be on everybody's bucket list. They just don't make enough films with this kind of atmosphere anymore, particularly in relation to what becomes of Garcia.
