- Kevin WardMay 24, 2026Abel Ferrara hits a sweet spot between 90s paranoia and gooey body horror and it still feels like its own feral little beast. I would say the gooey practical effects are the star, except that feels like a massive disservice to Meg Tilly, who is absolutely fabulous and gives the movie its most unforgettable presence. The supporting cast gave me a perfect wave of 90s nostalgia via Forrest Whitaker and R. Lee Ermey and the film still carries a biting cynicism around conformity. I really dug this. Hoping to check out the 70’s version soon.
