Martin Scorcese's filmography as director is one of the most accomplished in modern film history. While Cape Fear can't even hold a candle next to "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas", it is still a fabulous remake of the 1962 noir classic and it keeps the viewer on the edge right through until the closing credits.

This was a really strange movie. On the one hand, I liked the way it was shot. Set pieces were good, flow was good, and lots of good uses of lighting to make DeNiro scary. I also liked the dialogue. I thought that there wasn't much wasted dialogue, and the characters had some depth. Juliette Lewis was absolutely stunning in this. I was extremely impressed. She punched way above her weight class. Nick Nolte was also great, I always forget he wasn't a schlub actor. On the other hand, there were just some strange, strange choices. The strangest was DeNiro's accent. Its just incredibly jarring to listen to the entire movie, and frankly, makes him not scary at all at times. He often sounds like a LooneyToons character. Hell, he can still be from Georgia and not sound like a buffoon. Despite my earlier comment, there were some stranges choices to animate the sky towards the end of the movie, that also didn't make sense. I wish the book he had left Juliette was a bit more involved, otherwise it seems like some of that was chopped from the script and the whole thing as a whole should have been removed. All in all, good movie.

They went full send. Content, dramatics, heavy handed camera, nearly invincible villain. Not an easy rewatch for a father:

This is De Niro at his peak — unhinged, magnetic, and terrifying, a reminder of what he could do before Hollywood paychecks softened him up.
