- rg9400July 29, 2026I wanted to like Carolina Caroline a lot more than I actually did. I love Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner individually, and so having both of them as costars in a movie seemed like a dream. Unfortunately, I think they just don't have great chemistry together, and the romance is a very central part of this entire movie. The problem is that the plot has been done to death before, and everything that happens in this movie is extremely predictable. The first 2/3rds of the movie in particular feel like a beat-by-beat retelling of other more famous movies. The movie is best when it isolates Samara Weaving's Caroline and allows her acting and character arc to shine through the mundaneness of the rest of the movie. Unfortunately, it just does not do this enough, instead trying to rely more on the romance that just falls flat each time. Couple this with workman directing and plain cinematography, and the movie feels like an easy choice to skip despite the talent.

Just sit back and watch the story unfold, as the characters become more more interesting as you learn about them. Acting was very good, it definitely had a Bonnie and Clyde feel to it. It kept my attention the whole way through.
- HakihikoJuly 19, 2026Two Drifters and a Very Bad Idea Adam Rehmeier is quietly becoming one of the more interesting voices working in American indie cinema right now, and "Carolina Caroline" confirms that without making a big fuss about it. It's a Southern Gothic crime romance that sits very comfortably in a well worn tradition, lovers on the run, the open road, escalating stakes, but Rehmeier isn't really interested in reinventing the genre so much as finding the genuine human warmth hiding inside it, and that turns out to be enough. The film lives and dies on its two leads and both of them know it. Samara Weaving has rarely been given a role this rich to sink into, and she makes the most of every frame, playing Caroline with a restless, wide open energy that makes her transformation feel earned rather than imposed. Kyle Gallner, who at this point seems incapable of a dull performance, brings a loose, charismatic warmth to Oliver that keeps you on his side even when you probably shouldn't be. Together they have the kind of chemistry that directors can't manufacture and scripts can't fake. You just believe them, immediately and completely, and that's really the engine of the whole thing. Visually the film leans into the heat and grime of the American South with real conviction, all bleached out skies, roadside dives and motel parking lots that feel lived in rather than dressed. The cinematography keeps things intimate without being claustrophobic, and the sound design and score push a slow burning tension that creeps in gradually without you noticing until it's already under your skin. The script is smart in the way it builds the relationship through shared experience rather than declarations, letting the con work itself become a kind of courtship. The themes around escape, self invention, and the lies we need to believe about ourselves are present and genuinely felt, even if the film doesn't always have the appetite to push them as far as they could go. Where "Carolina Caroline" falls slightly short is in its second half, when the genre machinery takes over more fully and the quieter, character driven energy of the early stretches gets partially crowded out by plot. It doesn't quite reach the emotional devastation it's clearly reaching for by the end, falling just a step short of what could have been a genuinely shattering finale. Still, for a film this reliant on two people being magnetically watchable together, it delivers exactly what it promises and then some. Stylish, warm, and a little heartbreaking around the edges.
