Destroy All Monsters is the Avengers level event that brought together Toho’s most fearsome Kaiju for a knockdown slobberknocker of a fight and it does not disappoint. The film is set in the futuristic year of 1999, where Earth’s monsters have been peacefully contained on Monsterland. However, an alien race known as the Kilaaks seizes control of the creatures, unleashing them on major cities worldwide. Humanity must uncover the aliens’ plans and free the monsters to fight back against the real threat—King Ghidorah. A must-watch for kaiju fans, Destroy All Monsters delivers pure monster mayhem with a grand scope and nostalgic charm. Though light on story depth, its action-packed battles and all-star monster roster make it a highlight of the Showa Godzilla era.

What a disappointment! After years of hearing how this was the Showa era peak from friends I finally got around to watching, and have been left with only bitterness in my mouth. The human drama is more insufferable than usual and there is an overwhelming amount of it this time, despite the all out brawl I was promised. Woe! Thankfully the actual fight is very fun, but it doesn't even come close to the charm of the movies preceding it. I may revise my opinion when I inevitably revisit this one with tempered expectations, but its hard not to be disappointed with the promise of a Godzilla battle royale and not even getting that.
