Where to Watch Edward Scissorhands
- Garrett WilkinsAugust 22, 2026I've always loved how Edward Scissorhands looks like a fairy tale that somehow wandered into the suburbs. Tim Burton turns those pastel houses, perfectly trimmed lawns and almost absurdly colorful streets into a world that feels cheerful on the surface but strangely hollow underneath. I especially love the contrast between that cookie-cutter neighborhood and the dark castle where Edward has spent his life alone. Bo Welch's production design gives the film so much of its personality, while Danny Elfman's score brings a beautiful melancholy to the whole thing. Johnny Depp barely needs dialogue to make Edward's loneliness believable. So much of the character comes through in the way he moves, hesitates and tries to understand a world that has no idea what to do with him. I do think the film's satire of suburban conformity is a little more obvious than I would have liked. The gossiping neighbors and casual cruelty sometimes feel like caricatures rather than particularly sharp observations, and the sentimentality can occasionally become a little too sugary for its own good. Even with those flaws, I still find Edward Scissorhands incredibly easy to fall for. There is something genuinely sad about watching Edward briefly find a place where he might belong only for that acceptance to prove so fragile. Burton's imagination is the reason the film has lasted as well as it has for me. Edward Scissorhands may not cut as deeply as its premise suggests, but there are few movies that look quite like it.

From the neighbors always suggesting to get help (and never coming through) to the boyfriend being the only character that swears, there’s a lot of fun to unpack once the movie is over. One of Johnny Depp’s best roles.
