Where to Watch Ex Machina
- Garrett WilkinsJuly 11, 2026Rather than treating artificial intelligence as a technological spectacle, Ex Machina approaches it as a philosophical question. Alex Garland builds an intimate psychological thriller that relies more on conversation, observation, and uncertainty than conventional science fiction spectacle. Alicia Vikander delivers a remarkably controlled performance, while Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac provide strong contrasts that allow the film's central ideas to develop naturally. The result is a concept that remains consistently engaging because it seems far more interested in human nature than in technology itself. What ultimately held the film back for me was that its most compelling ideas arrived well before its final moments. Once the philosophical foundation had been established, I found myself waiting for the story to challenge those ideas in a more surprising or meaningful way. Instead, the final act felt more like a continuation of what had already been established than a genuine evolution of it. Even with that reservation, Ex Machina remains one of the more thoughtful science fiction films of recent memory because it trusts its ideas enough to let them drive the story rather than simply decorate it.
- VarunMay 14, 2026Watching this after 8 years and it’s even better on a rewatch. Every dialogue is so meticulously chosen, providing both serious philosophical reflection as well as punchy humour. The visual and auditory aesthetics of this movie are really well done, it’s sublime. And every actor did an absolutely brilliant job, from Oscar Isaac’s charisma to Domhnall Gleeson‘s unraveling and Alicia Vikander’s robotic display that almost borders human emotions. I think this movie will continue to remain timeless.
