Where to Watch Eyes Wide Shut
- Kanny DixonAugust 9, 2026I'll save you time with my personal feelings about this movie. To summarize, it's boring. If you're ready to have 2 hours of your life lost to Tom Cruise being confused and running around, (and also Nicole Kidman is there) this is the film for you. Pacing is far too slow and the stakes never feel as high as Tom Cruise is making them to be.
- jereni5August 1, 2026A snooze. Even for 1999 this is really tame. People have sex in masks in a scene or two. Maybe this is my fault for having a preconceived notion. Tom Cruise makes the most of his part and shows why he's such a star. Nicole Kidman is comically bad. Maybe it's just Kubrick asking her to play a silly ditz, but that's about all there seems to be in her role. The film opens interestingly as a married couple weighs the importance and function of monogamy in a modern upper class society...and then becomes about how that society is bad because they have sex. Cabals of evil, sex crazed oligarchs don't even meet in secret or in masks anymore, so nothing about this feels shocking or revelatory. The visuals are mostly beautiful and this stands as a great example of "the film look" but otherwise I'd never sit through this again.
- 0 1June 29, 2025Eyes Wide Shut, is a sharp social critique based on Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella Traumnovelle (Dream Story). The film peels back the veneer of wealth and privilege to expose the moral decay, obsession, jealousy, exploitation, and self inflicted social turmoil within high society. Kubrick forces the audience to confront questions: How much of our lives are performative? Who holds power in society? Can we ever fully know or trust our partners or ourselves? The movie has excellent music and cinematography which enhances the feel as a thriller. The repeating piano notes in one scene provide a deliberately jarring touch. some of the Plex reviewers don't seem able to understand the film or don't like the themes that are brought up. They should keep in mind, while some themes are present in the real world, this movie is fictional.
- PapaHamzehJune 26, 2026It takes a while to get going, but once it does I didn't want it to end. Kubrick has such an interesting way of shooting movies that even during the boring parts, I felt like drawn in simply because of camera choices. Tom's acting...when its good, its good! When he is playing the hammy gregarious fellow, I always seem to come to the realization that Im watching Tom Cruise. When he is doing some serious acting, and getting into character, I fall back into submersion. Nicole is good, too! And that one scene (you know the scene) man, it will stay with me forever. When the movie ended I was left scratching my head, unsure of what I had seen. It's taken some time for me to work through my feelings and thoughts and I really do think the movie has such an interesting way of telling the story it intends to tell. I will also say that I think the general masses who smell their own farts, so sure of themselves that certain events happen at the end of the movie, are way out of their element. Stories often tell you exactly what is happening, you just need to pay attention. Anything beyond that seems self-indulgent to one's worst traits; that is to say, if you aren't sure what you are watching, and stick to the literal interpretations of images and dialoge you are presented, then you will almost always come to the wrong conclusions. No, the child wasn't sacrificed you goobers.
- MikeOctober 11, 2024Eyes Wide Shut is a mysterious and dreamlike film that extracts curiosity out of the viewer "No dream is ever just a dream." Just like any other Stanley Kubrick film, Eyes Wide Shut has beautiful cinematography. The strong color contrast and strong compositions, combined with the nervous making score, result in a technically great and mysterious film. For me everything in the film evolved around the ritual scene, which is the key moment. The haunting song ‘Masked Ball’ by Jocelyn Pook makes it even better. The shots of the masked characters after the ritual are really powerful. The shots visualize multiple strong emotions, with a beautiful golden section composition, while maintaining a static image. The camera doesn’t move, the masked characters don’t move and the masks don’t have movement in their facial expressions. Yet the facial expressions of the masks are all very exaggerated and therefore very present, which moves the focus to the strong emotions on the masks. This focus gets further enhanced due to the close-up shots, black clothing and intimidating blocking of the masked characters that are breaking the fourth wall. This gives the viewer the impression the masked characters are looking at them from within their comfortzone. Letterboxd: Mike_v_E
- Christopher HirschDecember 24, 2025Interesting story about a satanic cult and a bystander who unknowingly walks into it. This entire film IS a satanic cult. The symbols are all laid out in plain view to see. Google it first and then watch the movie. I believe that Stanley Kubrick stumbled upon this kind of thing in real life, and since he didn’t have Christ to protect him, they killed him for it.
