What can I say about this now classic movie? I just watched it in full for the first time, after years of seeing snippets on television and then clips on the net, I sat down to watch it end to end. What stood out for me were the performances. They have an all star cast. The strongest performance came from Mary Louise Parker. Projecting both vulnerability and strength, I could buy Ruth's love for Idgie. Mary Stuart Masterson seems to be having a lot of fun as Idgie and it shows in her performance, although a court scene was somewhat disappointing. Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy were both very charismatic, and in quieter morments in the film were terrific. There were more than a few scenes, however, which I found a bit "act-y" or unconvincing. Unfortunately underused were Cicely Tyson and Stan Shaw, who both brought believability and dignity to their roles. There should have been more of them. Overall, it's a decent film. But given the amazing cast, I find myself ultimately disappointed.

This is a must watch and a real classic! There is an underlying murder mystery that is satisfying. If you're looking for a great time, watch this movie. I would definitely see it again.

I was kinda distracted & watching it with someone who wasn't really into it... May well score higher with another viewing. Still hit many an emotional high note & got in a few good laughs. I'm pretty keen to read the book, too.
