Not only does it excel in its scariness, but has excellent acting, writing, everything.

What separates Hereditary from many modern horror films is how carefully everything is constructed. Aster doesn't rely on cheap tricks or constant jump scares and instead patiently builds tension and allows it to accumulate until it becomes almost unbearable. The film is packed with memorable moments, including one sequence that serves as a surprisingly persuasive reminder of the importance of safe car riding practices. The technical craftsmanship is exceptional, from its meticulous cinematography to its unsettling sound design. But none of it would matter without such a strong script underneath. Hereditary doesn't simply deliver powerful scares-it builds an entire tragedy around them. The ending won't work for everyone, but I found it to be a fitting payoff to one of the most effective horror films of the last decade.
