Where to Watch I Used to Be Funny
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Well, this was not at all what I was expecting. Was expecting dramedy, but the drama was way heavier than I had anticipated. Rachel Sennott is just absolutely magnetic in everything, so it’s no surprise that she is excellent here. The non-linear storytelling I have mixed feelings about. I know it a depiction of Sam processing this traumatic event and working through those emotions. However, it feels very much like the method is employed specifically to withhold the details of the Sam’s trauma to save for a dramatic reveal more towards the end of the film. I feel like the film could have been equally as impactful and emotional if told in completely linear fashion. Sill really enjoyed it. Leaving this at 3.5, but I was very close to 4.
- rg9400July 8, 2026This movie is not really a comedy, though it does have Rachel Sennott's brand of humor and jokes peppered throughout. I actually thought the main premise was fairly compelling, and when everything was working, it was really engaging. Unfortunately, at random moments, the acting/dialogue/editing would suddenly become very amateurish and take me out of the movie. It just happened sporadically, and it felt like I was almost watching two different movies. The movie landed the emotional punches when it counted though. Because of this, I think it's still a good watch despite some of its rougher edges.
