Where to Watch In the Mouth of Madness
- Almost the only decent Lovecraft movie and Stephen King movie without being either. This is part of John Carpenter's Apocalypse trilogy of The Thing, Prince of Darkness & In The Mouth of Madness. A fantastic cosmic horror film that's masterfully directed, acted by the great Sam Neill, sound design, special effects and writing. This is the closest thing we will get to a great Lovecraft movie since Guillermo del Toro can't seem to get At the Mountains of Madness made.
- 7/10 – A Lovecraftian Descent into Madness In the Mouth of Madness is a slow-burn psychological horror with strong Lovecraftian vibes. Sam Neill delivers a fantastic performance, guiding us through an eerie, surreal nightmare. The creature design is top-notch, and the dramatic ending leaves an impact. While some pacing issues exist, its gradual descent into insanity makes it a must-watch for cosmic horror fans.
- Carpenter does Lovecraft is always a fun time. There is just such a great deal of scope for weird, unexpected story and visual twists and turns that you never really know what to expect. The story of Sutter Cane's supposed disappearance, followed by the existential threat that faces not just Sam Niell's character, but humanity iteself is lofty yes, it was always going to be hard to capture on screen. Carpenter does a truly admirable job with this though and manages to create something thats engaging from start to finish. Yes there's a lot of nonsense elements that don't quite tie up, but the premise gets you on board and you end up just accepting things as they appear. Most importantly the film takes an abstract and confusing idea and makes it simple to follow through to its conclusion. That's enough in my book!.
