- Patrick WaiMay 16, 2026Like being handed a cursed videotape and told to smile, Incantation works because it wraps you in dread long before it tries to shock you. The movie is soaked in unease, with that constant sick feeling that something terrible is already in motion and cannot be stopped. It’s smart enough to let the audience’s imagination do a lot of the heavy lifting, which makes the curse feel more invasive and disturbing than most horror movies dare attempt. I also liked the way it jumps between past and present, slowly peeling back the story instead of laying it out neatly, even if I wish it had slowed down just a little more and explained just a little more. It never really scared me in the jump-out-of-your-seat sense, but it absolutely got under my skin. That’s the difference between cheap horror and true dread. The found-footage approach is admittedly worn out by now, but here it still works because the atmosphere is so thick and the folk-horror elements are so masterfully done. The little girl is fantastic, and her performance gives the movie an emotional nerve that makes the curse hit even harder. The ending is decent, though not quite as devastating as the rest of the film deserves. Still, this is masterfully done Taiwanese folk horror: less a scream machine than a slow spiritual poisoning.
- kenngineerAugust 21, 2025equal parts dark and twisted. scary and engaging.it's about curses, superstition but suprisingly also about a mother's love. i would recommend this as a solid movie to recommend with the right combination of the horror elements: a dark lore behind the story, the story itself, and the jumpscares. it's a good blend. really solid.
