Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is one of the better videogame adaptations, and is always fun to go back to. From the impressive stunts actually performed by Angelina Jolie, to the stunning locations of Cambodia, to Iain Glen chewing the scenery with glee. It's one slick, well-paced adventure that really does carry through the core idea of Tomb Raider being a mashup of James Bond and Indiana Jones.

Ah yes, the year was 2001. I saw this in a packed Pathé bioscoop, back when popcorn still came in those waxy buckets. Angelina Jolie struts through this fever dream of a video game adaptation like she’s auditioning for both MI6 and a jungle rave. And somehow, it works. The plot? Something something ancient artifact, time portals, daddy issues and Daniel Craig doing his best “I’m not Bond yet” impression. But let’s be honest, nobody came for narrative coherence. We came for Jolie in tactical shorts, Iain Glen chewing scenery like it’s beef jerky and that glorious early 2000s editing style where every cut feels like it was made by a caffeinated teenager with a VHS deck. Bought the DVD the moment it hit Free Record Shop. Is it good? No. Is it fun? Absolutely. It’s like watching Indiana Jones after three Red Bulls and a PlayStation binge. And for that, it earns a permanent spot on my shelf wedged between Hackers and The Bone Collector, right where Jolie belongs.

So bad, sort your emails or shapen the mower blades. Would be a better use of your time.

Cheesy and over-the-top, comically childish, with a pretentiously nonchalant Angelina, and the first 40 minutes are a complete disaster.

It’s basically peak early-2000s blockbuster nonsense, and I mean that in a mostly affectionate way. Everything is over-the-top — the action, the gadgets, the accents, the dramatic stares — but Angelina Jolie is having a great time and makes it way more fun than it probably should be. Pretty silly overall, but it never feels boring. Easy movie to laugh at a little while still enjoying it.
