Where to Watch Lucky Strike
- Lucky Strike is the sort of war film I would happily keep around for a future rewatch, particularly because it does not require two and a half hours, seven generals and a CGI division crossing the horizon. Scott Eastwood plays Captain John Castle, stranded behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Bulge and trying to reach friendly forces with the help of a backpack radio he calls “Lassie”. What makes the film memorable is the attention it gives to ordinary survival objects rather than hardware spectacle: cigarettes, maps, uniforms, houses, footprints and that increasingly precious radio. The Lucky Strike detail is particularly good. Castle burns away the identifying cigarette mark, and the same tiny habit later contributes to his suspicion that another supposedly American soldier is not what he claims to be. The winter photography works, the Bulgarian locations actually look unpleasantly cold, and the radio gives the film a useful sonic rhythm of silence, static and sudden human contact. The weaknesses are mostly structural. Castle is deliberately laconic but occasionally too thinly characterised, and the episodic “next danger along the road” format starts showing its joins. The postwar framing also tells us very early that he lives. The ending's connection between Castle's survival and the home-front labour behind the radio is thoughtful, although I wish the film had woven that idea in earlier rather than saving so much of it for the coda. A solid library film rather than an essential one. I suspect the practical details will make it better on a second viewing.
