- Kevin WardJanuary 9, 2026Probably a significant amount of cultural divide made this a little too difficult to connect with. Kind of the same feeling I felt watching Rental Family this year. I was convinced that this profession can’t possibly be real. And after now watching a documentary about said profession, it still seems like a completely insane concept. So much of this could be avoided by husbands that are actually faithful to their wives and couples actually having open and honest communication with one another. That it I had a hard time believing that some of the subjects of this doc, didn’t have some kind of idea about what this woman’s actual role was in all of this. I don't know. Just a tough one for me to get into.
- hairydemonSeptember 3, 2025Half way through I felt I was implicit in a deception, by the filmmaker and not the husband. Beautifully photographed and observed, it ends up feeling a bit like a perfectly conceived work of fascist art. I don't think it is intentional, but there is something very weirdly unethical and slightly superior about the tone. The aspect of lying to your participants in order to get a story that YOU believe needs to be told. Even if it means following someone that lies for business. and even if they all agree at the end, it feels a detatched sense of moral justice has been vindicated. I can't put my finger on it but it doesn't feel right. It is beautifully made, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
