Stuck in one room the entire time became less and less appealing. I started to feel like I was being lectured about poker. I think skiing was the best part.

Quick, interesting, sexy and romanticized. Chastain was perfect. Elba and Cera were great touches. Costner surprises. Like Bonnie and Clyde.

The film is entertaining and engaging, but it is ultimately undermined by an imposed sense of morality, a framework ill-suited to a story rooted almost entirely in immorality. The film strains to pass judgment where observation would have been more effective, and in doing so dulls what could have been a sharper, more disciplined work. The recurring Crucible motif, in particular, feels forced and overstretched, asking the audience to accept a moral parallel the film never earns. The larger issue is Sorkin’s limitations as a director, or his inability to balance writing and directing at the same time. His familiar strengths remain on the page, but their execution on screen never fully materializes. The film attempts a fast, Sorkin-style pace, but it feels restrained when compared to his earlier work. Sorkin’s writing often benefits from another filmmaker translating his dialogue into action, rhythm, and visual clarity. Even with Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain, the dialogue frequently feels unanchored, and the pacing never reaches the sharpness his material usually demands. Despite its shortcomings, the film is unmistakably Sorkin, for better and worse. And while it’s difficult to imagine this project in anyone else’s hands, it reinforces the sense that he remains a writer first.

“It started with ski boots and ended with subpoenas.” Pre-flop: Thought I had pocket aces: ambition and immunity. Didn’t notice the IRS in the blinds. Flop: Celebs. Lawyers. Feds. I smiled. Raised. Turn: One bad call. One unpaid debt. One player folds — the others call backup. River: No help. No out. Just my name in the center of the table. Showdown: I never played their game. They played mine. But I’m the only one walking away without chips — and without lies.

High Stakes and Sharp Wit: A Great Game by Jessica Chastain! Molly's Game is a sharp, fast-paced drama that keeps you hooked from start to finish, and much of its success is owed to Jessica Chastain's stellar performance. She embodies Molly Bloom with a fierce, magnetic energy, perfectly capturing her character's intelligence, ambition, and vulnerability. Chastain balances the glamorous high-roller world of underground poker with the emotional weight of Bloom's personal struggles, delivering a portrayal that's both captivating and complex. Aaron Sorkin's script is equally impressive-snappy, clever, and filled with the rapid-fire dialogue he's known for. The film moves with a propulsive energy, with scenes that crackle with tension and wit. While the story of poker might not seem inherently thrilling, Sorkin's screenplay, combined with Chastain's commanding presence, elevates the material to a gripping character study. The film is occasionally bogged down by exposition, but its tight structure and sharp editing keep it engaging. Supporting performances, particularly from Idris Elba, add depth, but it's Chastain who truly owns the screen. In short, Molly's Game is a sleek, stylish drama with top-tier acting and a script that crackles with intelligence. An easy watching for anyone who loves character-driven stories with real bite.
