So dreary and uncomfortable. Performances were fine just not my vibe.

Almost forty-four years after its premiere in movie theaters, 1980’s Ordinary People feels just as relevant today, if not more so, than when it released. Although the film follows the turbulent inner life of the Jarrett family, Ordinary People is not an exercise in maudlin. For the most part, the deepest conflicts and the well of emotion lies beneath the surface of these characters in a poignant way. This storytelling decision - to keep this telling understated - hasn’t aged a day.

Gripping and depressing movie about loss tearing a family apart. The performances of Sutherland and Hutton really sell it.

This powerful human drama features incredible acting as an upper-middle class family melts into dysfunction in the wake of tragedy. No need to single out any cast members as they are ALL splendid while masterfully handling a superb screenplay adaptation. Nearly 45 years after it's release, this movie holds a lofty rank on my all-time favorites list. It's undoubtedly (oscar-winning director) Robert Redford's crown jewel of lifetime achievements. On a personal note, repeated watchings of this film helped me get through a private battle with depression during the 1980's. Knowing you are not alone is so important.
