- macaronz6d agoA Visually Staggering Ode to Naples That Sacrifices Narrative Cohesion Parthenope is a visually opulent, deeply eccentric cinematic experience that showcases director Paolo Sorrentino’s unmatched mastery of mood and camera work. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Naples, the film functions more as a dreamlike, impressionistic tapestry than a traditional story, tracking the long life of a woman who shares her name with the mythical siren. A lot of weird, abstract things happen throughout the film that don't seem to have any logical point, and because of that, the two hour plus runtime feels pretty heavy. Even so, the cinematography is so masterfully done that it keeps you hooked all the way through. Anchored by Daria D’Antonio’s gorgeous cinematography and Celeste Dalla Porta’s striking, stylish screen presence, it is a film designed to be bathed in visually rather than strictly deciphered. If any of my friends have actually sat through this one, I seriously need someone to explain what it all meant!
