A film that, like Orpheus and Eurydice, portrays two people existing on completely different planes, searching for common ground and slowly realizing that asking the other to change more than they wish is a step far greater than expected.
  • Charming even in its most graphic moments, thanks to Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling's insane chemistry and dedication to their roles. Pillion is about the complexity of a submissive/ dominant relationship. The film succeeds when it focuses on family dynamics: Colin's (Melling) sweet and loving but stifling parents in contrast with Ray's (Skarsgård) extreme and wolf pack-like biker gang.

A love story. Yep for all the advertising- the core of the film is a love story and a journey of self-respect and realization that love does not always conquer all. However- it is a well written and excellently performed film. There are several graphic sex scenes… however, they are not gratuitous and instead are key elements to the progression of the story and not there to shock or stimulate.
  • Tender, strange, sexy (Alexander Skarsgård just smolders the whole film), and unexpectedly moving, with an intimacy that’s hyper specific yet universal. Genuine complex romance and self discovery in an unconventional relationship dripping in awkwardness, humor, and kink. Fans of Secretary are in for a treat.

I appreciate Pillion but I don't necessarily like it. Pillion is one of those films where I see what they were going for, they achieved it but I just didn't vibe with it. Melling and Skarsgård are absolutely fantastic in their roles, I didn't think much of Melling before this but I shall be keeping an eye on him in future projects. To put it frankly, most of this film just made me uncomfortable. Just because it was intentional, doesn't make it an enjoyable viewing experience. There is surprisingly little bike stuff in this film. If you come here looking for cool biker stuff..... it's not what you are going to get! The audio and visuals are all fine. Nothing to report.

I don't watch trailers all the way through because many of them ruin the movie (by showing all the major plot points). Well, I don't know if the full trailer would've better prepared me for this film but it definitely was not what I was expecting. The trailer made it seem like a light-hearted romcom story of opposites in love. Boy was that not this movie! Pillion was good though. It shines a light on the subculture of dom/sub relationships that I've never seen highlighted to this extent in film before. It's a bit of a slow burn, but I appreciate how it let me peek behind the curtain on a different configuration of relationships, one I will most likely never experience (and I'm okay with that). There's really no other film like this -- no story that unfolds this way. It is singular, but that's not all. Pillion has solid acting, perfect music, and a quaint English setting. While I don't plan to pursue a relationship anywhere near what Pillion spotlights, I am glad I spent an evening steeped in it thanks to this film. You should take it on a date as well -- you might be surprised.

Harry Melling rides Alexander Skarsgård’s crotch rocket.  Quite liked this, though. Surprisingly funny and tender. Both Melling and Skarsgård are excellent.

What the hell did I just watch? There were some parts at the end of this film that were beautiful and honest but the rest of this film was like a gay biker sex fantasy. The ending was bittersweet and you need to watch this with an open mind. I guess the message here is love can come in many forms, but it just leaves you feeling sad and lonely.
