College student Lucy and her friends spend their vacation at her family's home in Hawaii, which includes her pet chimpanzee, Ben. However, when Ben contracts rabies after being bitten by a rabid animal, the group must fight for their lives in order to avoid the now-violent chimp.
- stuhannaford1d agoHaving read the reviews, and being a huge horror fan, I was excited to see what all of the fuss was about... very little it turns out. Extraordinarily light on story, and I found myself close to nodding off once things take a turn. Lots of gore, lots of violence, but it all just felt like it was for the sheer sake of it. Very much a movie by numbers, and predictable. All the usual cliches are there, you know who's surviving, so you're never on the edge of your seat. And AGAIN, for a modern horror movie, a real waste of a fairly clever, reasonably original story. And so much more could have been made of the deaf characters' interesting POV. Build up, build up and... just let the effects team finish it off. Dull and boring, with utterly disinteresting characters.
- LinoJuly 26, 2026SPOILERS So a conservationist, both his daughters and the vet all fail to recognise or at least consider that a bite could transmit rabies. Absolute BS. The dude says "There's no rabies in Hawaii" Bro, there's no mongoose in Hawaii either! There's not one character in this that isn't completely brainless. The obvious small person in a chimp suit is looks cheap, so do the effects, animals with rabies don't retain the level of intelligence for hiding and sneak attacks, and the pool looks out to an open cliff with no safety rail, hahaha. I know it's a movie but goddamn, zero realism. Oh yeah, and a man has a fist-fight showdown with a chimp that has the strength of 10 men, because he doesn't have a goddamn gun, even a tranq. 1 star for a great idea, but only 1 star because it was terribly executed. Shame really. I really wanted to like this.
- Hipster ZOMBIEJanuary 15, 2026Primate (2025) is pretty dumb, gloriously gory, and exactly the kind of midnight-movie creature feature that knows it’s throwing bananas and leans into the splatter. The setup is pure B-movie goodness: a crazed pet chimpanzee with rabies by way of a mongoose, and escalateing choas with some very stupid young adults caught in the middle. The gore lands hard and often, with wince-worthy kills that feel handcrafted for genre sickos who like their horror messy and mean. Like me. The human element is a circus of bad decisions. The kids are walking cautionary tales, and the parent (a deaf author who is about to go on a book tour) are so aggressively brain-dead you’ll forget they’re supposedly ape experts. It’s frustrating, hilarious, and oddly charming in how committed it is to stupidity. What really sells it is the score, a creepy, synth-soaked pulse that feels like a lost Goblin tape unearthed from a Dario Argento vault. Primate won’t be the best horror film of 2026, but it definitely won’t be the worst, and against all odds, you’ll probably have a damn good time watching it, I know I did.
