Having recently found God, self-effacing young nurse Maud arrives at a plush home to care for Amanda, a hedonistic dancer left frail from a chronic illness. When a chance encounter with a former colleague throws up hints of a dark past, it becomes clear there is more to sweet Maud than meets the eye.
Where to Watch Saint Maud
- Garrett WilkinsJuly 18, 2026Saint Maud is another reminder of why A24 has become so closely associated with psychological horror that favors atmosphere over spectacle. Rose Glass builds a constant sense of unease without relying on frequent scares, allowing Morfydd Clark's deeply committed performance to carry the film. Her portrayal of Maud is unsettling because it never feels exaggerated, making the character's increasingly obsessive worldview both fascinating and uncomfortable to watch. The film's deliberately measured pace won't work for everyone, but I admired how fully it committed to its vision instead of chasing conventional horror thrills. While I respected much of what the film was trying to accomplish, I found it more intellectually engaging than emotionally gripping. My biggest criticism is that it offers very little distinction between sincere Christian faith and religious fanaticism. Whether intentional or not, that lack of nuance weakened its central themes for me. Even so, Rose Glass directs with confidence, and Saint Maud stands as one of A24's more distinctive psychological horror films, even if it isn't among my personal favorites.
