Cynthia lives in London with her sullen street-sweeper daughter. Her brother has been successful with his photographer's business and now lives nearby in a more upmarket house. But Cynthia hasn't even been invited round there after a year. So, all round, she feels rather lonely and isolated. Meanwhile, in another part of town, Hortense, adopted at birth but now grown up, starts to try and trace her mother.

    Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a performance quite like Brenda Blethyn’s here — so believable and raw. I love when a movie takes its time, letting the audience sit with the characters’ emotions and truly feel them.

    Culminates in a tragically powerful scene. Spall and Blethyn bring humanity to their roles. Captivating cinematography in seemingly simple shots.

    I couldn't handle the theatrical performances and the set-ups that for me were a bit stupid. Not bad but very painful.
