Where to Watch Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
- KGM SOSAJune 15, 2026I’m completely expecting backlash for what I’m about to say, but honestly this film is mid despite having redeeming qualities, it’s just mediocre. I should preface by saying I love old movies, classic 40s & 50s film noir is my favourite film genre tied with horror, so I’m not hating on this film simply because it’s old, however I’m going to be generous & unbiased & acknowledge that some of its shortcomings may simply be a product of its age holding it back. I do think a lot of the love this film gets is from nostalgia because I simply can’t believe I’m the only one that finds it mediocre. Firstly the qualities that do redeem this movie are Darth Vader, the score, the groundbreaking effects for the 70s, the detail in the ships. Everything about Darth Vader is awesome, he’s got so much aura & is a total badass, as was James Earl Jones (rip), he is stylish & menacing, he’s probably the most recognisable & iconic villain in history from any medium, not just film. The score was excellent, it’s very iconic & anybody that hears the soundtrack instantly recognises it as Star Wars even if they’ve never actually watched a Star Wars movie, you just know it via cultural osmosis. I’ve been wondering during this Star Wars marathon why the score sounds eerily similar to the Superman franchise score & learned that the score is composed by the same man, John Williams. He is the most legendary composer in film history, as well as the every film in the Star Wars franchise, he composed the Superman movies scores, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Munich, War of the Worlds & Memoirs of a Geisha, on top of who knows how many other films. I will say despite this high praise I’m giving, the score he created in the prequels (1999-2005) were far better than this film though. Also briefly I’d like to point out that the visual effects for the Death Star were groundbreaking for the time, it deserves its respect. However let’s dive in to some of the stuff I think hold this film back; the lightsabers, planet designs, etc were just awful compared to what we were blessed with in the prequel trilogy, the lightsabers looked bad in particular, I can’t stress enough how bad they looked compared to the later films & the fact they didn’t have the smear effect when being swung in rapid motion. One of the things the prequels perfected was the way lightsabers left a luminous smear & wide ghost trail when swung rapidly, creating a sense of speed, power & weight. I don’t know how to describe it but regardless in this film they’re just glowing sticks. Also the lightsaber dueling action is terrible, the prequels were able to demonstrate abilities so much better where Jedi’s could jump, flip & move with ninja precision & speed, because they have superhuman athleticism due to the better VFX available whereas the lightsaber fight between Darth Vader & Obi-Wan in this looked like a joke, the were just standing there having the most underwhelming, lamest sabre fight you could imagine, I understand the the VFX at the time weren’t what they are now but you’re telling me they couldn’t even secure some stuntmen/martial artists to atleast try to have the ninja reflexes & speed of a Jedi? I wasn’t pleased with many other aspects of the film too, Luke was underwhelming as a character & was also poorly cast, in contrast to they flawless casting of Hayden Christensen as Anakin, Mark Hamilton was just not that good. Also the story was good from a technical storytelling standpoint but I just couldn’t care less at times because the plot development was very averagely paced. There was a lot to love about this film but it just wasn’t the masterpiece I was anticipating, I grew up obsessed with the prequel trilogy & being spoiled with those films I guess this one just paled in comparison, I understand that VFX are better now & the story was more fleshed out by film 4-6 but I just hoped for more, the saving grace of this film is honestly just Darth Vader, as well as the historical significance of the film, I do remember liking ‘Empire Strikes Back’ though so hopefully I have better things to say about that one upon rewatch. Overall this film is a 6/10 (Decent / Okay movie with some good bits).

And let’s not forget John Williams’ legendary score. The Force theme. The Trench run. And of course Binary Suns which is one of the most beautifully conducted musical scenes in cinematic history. Star Wars took a simple formula with a narrative constructed off of cherry picked ideas from other stories and gave fans an amazing sci-fi fantasy that continues to inspire future generations.
- marshalseaSeptember 22, 2025The perfect storm of great actors, great story, great director/writers, great music, the greatest fx (if you watch the original theatrical and not the dodgy updated versions) and as the story goes great editing. Proof it doesn't all fall to one person. From the opening roar of trumpets to the crawl to the final explosion and lack of wookie award - perfect perfect perfect. They don't make em like this anymore, and in most cases just destroy it's heritage. Pretend The Last Jedi crap etc doesn't exist and just go back to those original three - even the ewoks don't seem so lame anymore.

Positives: - The movie is well made, well directed, well edited, well paced, and well shot - The movie visually looks really good especially for it’s time - The score is spectacular - The movie of course is very iconic - The film contains a lot of iconic and memorable moments and quotes that I still use today - The story is simple but executed to perfection - The performances are really good - The characters are iconic and amazing - The character arks are incredible - The action sequences are a lot of fun - The movie as a whole is an absolute blast and a hilarious movie to watch Overall Star Wars: A New Hope is still a classic masterpiece that spawned one of the most iconic and important franchises ever!
