- James SaenzJanuary 23, 2026“life is a wave on the sea. would you force the sea to grow still to save one wave? to save yourself?” in the midst of lackluster world building and middling character drama there lie some absolute banger lines. i see what the film was aiming for, but the writing and direction leave so much to be desired; it definitely feels like goro miyazaki seemed out of his depth and was missing the poignancy through simplicity that his father excels at in storytelling. there’s a complex and fascinating narrative about living a life of meaning in a high fantasy world that feels like it’s trapped beneath a meandering story with uninteresting characters. if anything, it made me far more interested in the book series it attempted to adapt, especially since it seems like the inheritance cycle borrowed its entire magic system from the earthsea series, and that was one of my favorite fantasy series as a child.

Despite that, one of the most visually beautiful ghibli movies in my opinion. Glad I watched it, will watch it again when I want to treat my eyes, but it won’t hit the “top x” list
