However being a true fan, I’m upset that they left out some great scenes for “pacing issues”, that I thought would have added to the story and song of the picture.
- ShaydeknightOctober 30, 2025I saw Tenacious D live back in the late 90s. The show was a lot of fun. It was silly and a great spectacle. But like most things built on novelty, it fades. Over the years, the whole act feels like a phase, like being obsessed with Dr. Demento at twelve. Jack Black and Kyle Gass are undeniably talented musicians, but it's a shame they've committed their talents to a brand of adolescent fanboyism that wears thin after ten minutes. The film is no better. It's their stage shtick stretched to feature length. It's loud, juvenile, and painfully one-note. I've never found Jack Black remarkably funny. He has his moments, but they're few and far between. He was surprisingly good in the Jumanji films, largely because he wasn't Jack Black for once, he actually played different characters. On the other hand, when he's miscast or overextends himself, he's unwatchable. Case in point: The Holiday. I've never seen a more inappropriate casting choice for a simple rom-com role. He was the worst part of that film, and that's saying something. As for The Pick of Destiny, there's just nothing good or funny about it. It's boring, juvenile, and self-indulgent. Maybe I'll try watching it high next time, apparently that's the only way it's meant to be seen. And for the record, I didn't need an ultra-close-up of an erection as a plot device. Not because I'm a prude, but because it's just lazy shock humour, the cinematic equivalent of a 13-year-old shouting "penis" to get a laugh. All in all, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny is a pretty lousy film, a loud, joyless attempt to stretch a quick joke into two hours.
