Iron Man put Marvel Studios on the map but it’s the Avengers that cemented them as a powerhouse in Hollywood. From after credit scenes to cameos to build up for future films it all led to this. The ultimate superhero crossover no one thought was possible. That is until the people at Marvel Studiod said, let’s just do it. Guided by the now infamous Joss Whedon, the story brought together Earth’s Mightest heroes in a climatic showdown against Loki. Everyone remembers where they were when the Avengers assembled for the first time as the camera panned around the entire team and the heroic Avengers theme hit its crescendo before the Avengers went into battle together, for the first time. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. This was Marvel at its peak. A seminal moment in cinematic history. I love the first Avengers movie and is the only one I’ll still sit down and watch all the way through if it’s on TV.

The Avengers is still one of the most fun superhero movies ever made. The action is huge, the humor actually lands, and the chemistry between the cast is ridiculous in the best way. Loki steals every scene he’s in, and New York battle still goes hard. What really makes the movie special though is how perfectly it handles the team. Every character feels true to who they are, and somehow they all get their own moment to shine without it ever feeling forced or overcrowded. It’s one of the few ensemble movies where nobody feels wasted. Yeah, some of the CGI looks a little dated now and the story is pretty straightforward, but honestly none of that matters when the movie is this entertaining. Pure blockbuster magic.

In a word it is a Marvel that not only this movie exists, but that every aspect of this movies fits within itself and the MCU as a whole. This movie is the example for how to do a superhero team with an ensemble. Every character has a role, and they feel like a team, and the opposition in this movie is nuanced as its not just Loki and his army, but also the status quo (lets have a nuclear deterrent). While it maybe subtle in the larger narrative of the MCU it is a precursor to the dangers of government and the military industrial complex. Maybe that seems a bit deep, but you notice patterns in these movies related to weapons, power and control.

The Avengers delivers a genuinely fantastic Hulk experience, capturing the essence of the characters while providing top-notch entertainment. It strikes a perfect balance that appeals to both comic book aficionados and casual fans, making it an A+ film for everyone.

8.4/10 The culmination of Phase One is great, with a good villain, iconic score motif, and general enjoyment, though it does at times feel like a direct-to-dvd movie, sometimes for the better.

The movie that began it all. Truly will go down as a classic 20 years from now. The CGI doesn't hold up the best but it's a 13 year old movie so what can you do. Amazing from start to finish.
