  • Lovely film, slightly daft, but well-acted and heartfelt. Tom Basden apparently wrote the songs, which are surprisingly good, and he plays very well. Carey Mulligan is also a very good singer, which lends an air of authenticity to the whole thing. If you like low-budget, well-acted comedy-drama, thus is for you.

Such a great film. Perfectly timed awkwardness and pure, clean humor paired with an unmatched sentimentality. This movie beautifully celebrates the spectrum of grief and renewal. Absolute gem of a performance from everyone. 10/10.

I thought this was going to be a commentary on art, patronage, and the unhealthy relationship some fans have with the artist, but it ended up being more about the artists’ relationship including their art….and then it goes back to my original thesis. All while being comedic and grappling with the past! Such a uniquely sad and annoying character. The Brits are very good at that! Hilarious in the most tiresome way The lantern-tracking shot was very neat. Loved the music! Beautiful film! Added to 2025 Ranked

Surprisingly charming, great acting, beautiful setting. Loved the way the story unfolded throughout and the intricacies of the main characters. All this, and I watched it on a plane.

Gentle, Thoughtful, and Quietly Moving "The Ballad of Wallis Island" is a film that charms without shouting - a slow-burn story built more on mood and character than dramatic peaks. It's the kind of movie that doesn't seek to overwhelm, but rather to gently draw you into its world and leave you with something quietly resonant. The strengths of the film lie in its thoughtful pacing and emotionally grounded performances. The cast delivers natural, believable portrayals that make the characters feel like real people living through real complexities. There's an ease to their interactions that gives the story a lived-in, authentic feel - which becomes the movie's true anchor. Visually, "The Ballad of Wallis Island" is understated but effective. The cinematography creates a sense of place that feels intimate and distinct, contributing to the film's reflective atmosphere without ever becoming overly stylized. The soundtrack is subtle and complementary, reinforcing moods rather than imposing them. While the narrative doesn't take many big risks and avoids grand spectacle, it's steady and coherent, with moments of genuine warmth and insight. Some viewers might wish for a bit more emotional punch or narrative drive, but for those who appreciate character-focused storytelling, this film delivers moments of real connection. In the end, "The Ballad of Wallis Island" is a satisfying, gentle watch - thoughtful, well acted, and emotionally sincere. It may not be flashy, but it's undeniably pleasant and engaging in its own quiet way.

Somewhere between a lighter, funnier Once and Rudderless, with shades of Inside Llewyn Davis, but with more emotional maturation and actual growth.

Adorable! Simple, but effective. Felt good after and was cheesin' the whole third act. Tim Key was the best. I just think of him as his character. No way that was only acting.

It's an enjoyable movie even with all the contrivances that drive it. The emotion in Tim Key's eyes genuinely moved me on a couple of occasions.
