Javier Bardem shines as Agustín Rejas, a Federal Intelligence Detective hunting a Marxist revolutionary leader before a full revolution starts. The scene early in the film where dead dogs are found hanging from city lamp posts with political slogans wrapped around them is a direct reference to Sendero Luminoso’s real-world "Dogs of Deng Xiaoping" campaign in Lima in 1980. It was their eerie, theatrical way of declaring war on Chinese reformism and socialist "revisionists." Malkovich’s direction pairs ballet Juxtaposed with scenes of urban violence and poverty, reflecting the nation’s turmoil and extreme inequality. The real story of how the leader of Shining Path was captured and subtle references of Alberto Fujimori's corrupt government are well shown through this movie.
