Where to Watch The Front Room
- FranBizJuly 22, 2025The biggest problem I have with this movie is that it's marketed as a horror movie, but it's not. If you watch the trailer, the movie makes it look like there's something evil about the grandmother, but she's not. She's just old and annoying. This is just a family drama film with lots of urine and poop scenes. The movie does still have some horror elements, but it's like 10% of the movie. I think the movie was trying to mimic the success of Get Out, but it fails. If I were to compare this movie, it would be more similar to The Deliverance (2024), but even that movie had horror elements like demonic possession in it. This movie doesn't. This movie is just a family drama about an interracial couple dealing with a granny that doesn't approve of many of the couple's choices. That's all I will spoil one part of the trailer. There's a part in the trailer where it looks like the granny is going to unleash something evil. The trailer than blacks out to the title. You want to know what she unleashed that is so evil that couldn't be shown in the trailer? A fart. Don't be fool with this movie. It's not a horror flick.
- Larry ScottDecember 5, 2024The “Mother in Law “ actress deserves an award for her performance. She acted circles around the others. She was the only reason I rated the movie high. She ABSOLUTELY carried an otherwise un remarkable movie with mediocre acting. I can’t say enough about her singular performance.
- Garrett WilkinsJuly 4, 2026The Front Room attempts to build psychological horror from an increasingly uncomfortable domestic situation, but the execution never rises above the irritation created by its own premise. Max and Sam Eggers show flashes of visual confidence throughout their feature directorial debut, and Kathryn Hunter commits completely to a performance that is intentionally unsettling. Brandy Norwood also gives a strong performance, doing her best to ground the film emotionally even as the story becomes increasingly difficult to invest in. Where the film ultimately fell apart for me was in its inability to develop beyond its central idea of a visit from an unwelcome in-law. Much of the tension feels repetitive rather than escalating, and the tonal shifts between psychological horror, dark comedy, and absurdity never fully come together. As the younger half-brothers of Robert Eggers, comparisons are naturally going to be made, but The Front Room lacks the thematic creativity and immersive atmosphere that have become hallmarks of the older Eggers brother's work. I think there are flashes of ability behind the camera that could translate into stronger films in the future. But this debut simply leaves me hoping their next project is built on a more compelling foundation and frankly, a less annoying premise.
