The Lawnmower Man

I consider this a must-see for sci-fi fans who want something more than aliens and time travel. It shows the potential for the use and abuse of technology and power in general. The contrast is excellently acted out by Fahey.
- MR_BigTimeJuly 2, 2026Dated graphics and sounds effects and all (much like the original The Sims which birthed what's currently EA's largest franchise, and both being 30+ years old, for Christ's sake) The Lawnmower Man gets way less credit than it deserves. This film singlehandedly presented the idea of VR to the masses, if I'm not mistaken. The technology was largely experimental back in the day, and nothing like what we know about it now. Fahey did a great job starring in this one, selling a very relatable and believable underdog-to-villain arc. Brosnan is always a delight to watch. Dean Norris' talent was wasted with the way his role was presented, but he still ate it up.

The early 3‑D graphics were interesting for their time, but the film never convincingly explains how virtual reality could enhance someone’s intelligence—if anything, the transformation feels more chaotic than enlightening. The storyline drifts into odd territory, mixing techno‑thriller ideas with pseudo‑mysticism, and the result is often more confusing than compelling. Adding to the awkwardness is the decision to slap a blonde wig on the lead character, a choice that looks distractingly artificial and undermines the performance. It’s easy to understand why Stephen King distanced himself from the adaptation, as the movie bears little resemblance to his original short story. While The Lawnmower Man has a certain nostalgic charm as a relic of early digital‑age anxieties, it ultimately feels like a misguided attempt at visionary sci‑fi.
