Michael, Guy and Robert are three impoverished young artists sharing a studio in Chelsea, London. Despite their talent, they are unable to make a living and remain unrecognized. Michael's girlfriend is Joan. During a party in the studio, Robert argues that the only good artist is a dead one. He suggests that one of the three should die to gain recognition, leaving his entire estate, including an undisclosed number of paintings, to his two friends to manage and sell at inflated prices. The conversation might have ended there, but agent Clifton arrives late to the party with news that one of his clients liked two of Michael's paintings but would not value them because the artist had not suffered. This spurs the three men into action. They decide that the one who draws the lowest card from the deck will be the one to 'die'. Michael draws the low card. He is sworn not to reveal the plan to Joan. Michael fakes a suicide by drowning in Ireland. While the art world begins to take notice, he moves into a quiet cottage in Sussex while Guy and Robert cash in on his name, selling his remaining work. While Guy and Robert argue about the effect Michael's supposed death is having on Joan, Michael telephones her to let her know he is alive and begs her to keep the secret. Guy makes a move on Joan, but she hints that she knows the truth. When more canvases are needed, Guy volunteers to take them to Michael to sign. At the cottage, the two friends fight over Joan. Guy grabs a shotgun to shoot Michael, they struggle for the gun, and during the struggle, Guy is shot.
