Where to Watch The Odyssey
- Andrea Strangio14h agoThe cinematography, while cold in tone, is absolutely stunning, with breathtaking visuals throughout. The performances are incredible, carried by a cast made up almost entirely of A-list stars. The plot, even with the usual Nolanisms and despite being a story everyone already knows-kept me completely hooked for the entire three hours, making them feel like just one. absolute cinema of a movie, and it's no surprise that it's dominating the box office. It's still doesn't hold a candle to the Italian miniserie masterpiece from 68 though.
- HaHaHarvey443d agoChristopher Nolan decides the greatest adventure story ever written needs a sensitivity read, a diversity quota, and a three-hour runtime to lecture you about how violence is bad, actually. The casting is an act of cultural vandalism. Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy – the woman whose face launched a thousand ships and who Homer explicitly describes as fair-skinned – is the kind of decision that only makes sense if your primary audience is awards voters and lunatic left activists. Elliot Page as Sinon is pure ideological cosplay: a biological woman playing a Greek warrior in a story that has zero need for modern gender politics. The rest of the ensemble is the usual Hollywood mix of American and British faces with almost no actual Greek or Mediterranean blood in sight. Complete lack of self-awareness. Visually, the film is grey, overcast and honestly not very interesting. The armor looks like it was designed by someone who saw a museum exhibit once. The ships, the helmets, the entire aesthetic feel Northern European and miserable instead of sun-bleached and Mediterranean. Nolan shot the most famous voyage in literature like it was taking place in a depressed corner of Scotland. The one exception is the Cyclops sequence, which actually looks like something out of a myth. Everything else is muted, dreary, and aggressively un-epic. The dialogue is a special kind of tone-deaf. Characters drop modern phrasing and flat American/British accents into a supposedly fantastical epic like they’re ordering coffee. "Mom.", “Dad.” “Ten years on this fucking beach. Let’s go home!” It’s linguistic heresy. Combined with Nolan’s usual sound-mixing – dialogue buried under score, explosions that still somehow feel quiet – it becomes exhausting to sit through. Pacing is glacial. Odysseus himself has been sanded down into something softer and more reflective than the cunning, ruthless survivor of the poem. Nolan appears to have drawn more inspiration from Emily Wilson’s 2017 feminist translation of the poem, the one that reframes Odysseus as a cOmPliCaTeD mAn and softens the epic’s classical edges, than from Homer himself. Robert Pattinson is the only actor who brings any real presence – he at least looks like he belongs in this world and isn’t just collecting a paycheck while the culture war rages around him. The Cyclops is the only set piece that delivers any genuine awe. Everything else is self-serious, overlong, and poisoned by the desperate need to be relevant (meet the DEI quota to qualify for an Oscar) in 2026 instead of timeless. Two stars, and that’s being generous. One for Pattinson, one for the Cyclops. The rest is a $250 million reminder that even Christopher Nolan can be brought low by the same DEI/ThE mEsSaGe rot. Add it to the list of the forgettable woke dross of the last 10 years.
- Lancer Marino3d agoNot as big an extravaganza as I was expecting Overall a B-, hey it’s an ‘old script’ and been shopped EVERYWHERE, 70 Mil or not.. the SiSu Franchise has much more bang for the buck…. Sadly lacking in coherence or any true sense of Heroic Male Bonding as in most retelling of the story, got the feeling he and his assorted crew were just Hessian’s hired for the job as opposed to any higher calling to the fidelity of Agamemnon’s Legacy or Monarchy!!
- Mike Shulman1d agoThe Odyssey is great regardless of what you hear from right wing trolls... The retelling of Homers classic aces just about every area of film making. You can choose to look for deeper messages such as how men are pigs and they oppress women. How Odysseus really isn't that great a guy... a war criminal even... but at least he comes to terms with it right? You can just enjoy it for the epic scenes and locations or the bombastic score. Take in the acting if you will. Whatever your reason is for liking it... you're not wrong. I'm not going to go super deep into it because well... most of us read the book at some point in school. If you did and you ever wondered how this would work as a movie... well you got the right filmmaker at the right time. Nolan is a master at his craft and a master of spectacle. If this wasn't already evident The Odyssey certainly solidifies it. It's not without its flaws though as I was slightly concerned for the first 40 or so minutes... but once it picks up it never really stops. Pick your bathroom breaks wisely. Now to the right wing nut job trolls who complained about the casting because... well complaining and making issues out of nothing it there job... The casting is absolutely fine... honestly only idiots would be watching this movie and think about the color of the actor cast in a part... especially because they're black or transgender. Helen has about 5 minutes on screen and Sinon though important to the plot probably double that. And to be honest one of the best scenes of the entire movie takes place between Odysseus and Sinon in Hades. Also... there were dark skinned/black people in ancient Greece. There were Indian people in ancient Greece all due to trade and trade routes. To nitpick at this is stupid and really just shows your innate racism. The Odyssey 8/10
- Doc Worm22h agoThe Odyssey is truly epic in the classical use of the phrase. Told as a fable with a propulsion narrative tool that wraps in a complete circle. Another Nolan classic with gorgeous color grading, tight editing, and bombastic sound. While I didn't see this in IMAX as it was intended to be seen, there is still a lot that is visually rich enough that it translates well into the 16:9 format. There was only one of two scenes that I felt I felt would have benefited 1.42:1 ratio. This could have been solved by simply pulling the camera a bit. A few uneven performances were completely overshadowed by how incredible others were. Some of the action shots could've been improved by a sturdier framing from the cameraman, but honestly, those concerns are so nitpicky given how rich the other aspects of the film are.
- Mike1d agoGreat movie, and I'm sure Homer would've loved this portrayal of his story. Sure, there were some changes, some big and some small. But anyone who has any knowledge about Ancient Greece and its philosophers, would know that a Greek like Homer would absolutely cheer on creative changes to his story. Nolan has created an amazing portrayal of this story, and together with the soundtrack, this made for one of the best movies in the last years.
- James Saenz1d ago“to burn the walls of troy was to burn the world-entire.” i have never seen odysseus portrayed as a tragic figure, wracked by the guilt of what his actions wrought upon troy. this film is a reckoning with the consequences of world-altering innovation, a coming-to-terms with the ramifications of deceit and sacrilege; the losing of one’s humanity. in many ways, it’s a companion piece to both oppenheimer and tenet, an exploration of mankind’s hubris and the havoc it ushers in with each new age of warfare. nolan seems to feel the weight of a titanic guilt upon his shoulders, and the only way to express it is with these figures who, in most any other telling of their stories, would be revered as heroes and innovators; the lenses of guilt and shame provide a rich and fresh perspective on what is essentially the blueprint for modern storytelling. it may not be a faithful adaptation of the odyssey, but by god is it astonishing and perfect in its own way.
