Zootopia 2 is another movie in a string of unnecessary Disney sequels, and I was debating whether or not to actually watch this one or just treat it like the older direct to DVD sequels that Disney used to make. It's not that bad, but it also does still feel very unnecessary. The first movie has very pointed social critique that works extremely well within its setting. This movie sort of tries to do that, but it feels a lot more superficial this time around. A large part of that is by utilizing a much more standard villain instead of really exploring the social forces that try to divide people. I get that this is a kid's movie, but it's what made the first one so impressive in my opinion. I also think the character drama between Judy and Nick is way more forced this time instead of feeling organic. The setting is still really fun with plenty of new zany characters and lots of fun adventure moments that are sure to please families. It also has plenty of visual gags and still plays homage to movies. There is a great sequence straight out of the Shining that I never expected to see in a Disney movie. That said, I felt this was also toned down a bit compared to the first movie, but it's still present. Overall, I think if you are looking for a fun movie with adventure and humor and want to be back in this world, you will enjoy this movie. If you are expecting it to be really doing something new, telling a story that feels justified instead of forced, or making sharp socioeconomic commentary, then I think it does fail to live up to the original.

Loved the first, this is ok but not quite the delight of the original, I guess that's the majority of sequels.

2ootopia is very good overall, though in terms of some of the throwaway jokes, plot points, and the story overall there was definitely some high level, more adult stuff in this one. I guess that's not totally out of character for the series, given the nudist club in the first. But having threesome jokes, political murder plots, and patent paperwork conspiracy in a kids movie felt (Nick) wild(e). The theme of legacy hungry land owners growing their power on the backs and disenfranchisement of the industrious impoverished definitely felt poignant. And it was nice to see Nick and Judy being able to identify, work through, and communicate their feelings lucidly, even if the scene itself didn't exactly play believably. I don't think this one will be an eventual re-watch favorite in our household, unlike the first was.

Decent enough movie but not quite as good as the original.

While not quite as strong as the original, Zootopia 2 continues the adventures of Wilde and Hopps (Hopps and Wilde) with a familiar focus on what makes this odd couple work, plenty of humor, and a case with grand stakes for the city. Aside from the obvious humor in the movie, I appreciate the hidden jokes in the stunt voice casting.
