Where to Watch A Gentleman in Moscow
- fhe82July 18, 2026I admit that I have a bias when judging A Gentleman in Moscow. After reading that wunderbar of a book, the bar was already extremely high for any television adaptation. The atmosphere and recreation of the Metropol Hotel are world-class. The production does an excellent job making the hotel feel grand, alive, and almost like a character of its own. The way the series shows the passing of the years is also very well done. The makeup gives you a real sense of time moving forward, and the changing hairstyles and clothing of each era support that beautifully. Those details help the hotel and its residents feel as if they are truly aging through history. Alexander’s attic room, however, did not impress me nearly as much. There are also too many alterations and strange little quirks throughout the story that do not fully honor what made the book so special. Another thing that bothered me was the complete absence of Russian accents. I understand that a production may not be able—or may not choose—to cast native Russian actors for every role. But if almost every character is Russian, could the English-speaking actors at least attempt some kind of Russian accent? Hearing everyone speak in completely natural British or American voices weakened the setting for me. That said, the series is still very good. The actors carry it, and they are especially excellent in Episode 7. That episode showed how powerful the adaptation could be when the performances, emotion, and production all worked together. Unfortunately, they completely dropped the ball in the final episode. It should have been so much more than what they delivered. Compared with the original story, it felt rushed, weakened, and surprisingly lame. It was not one enormous mistake that ruined it; it was the accumulation of missing or altered details that made the ending land flat. A very good series based on an extraordinary book—but the book remains far superior. Thank you for reading.
