- flowersfamily2d agoI need therapy after watching this. It's brutal. It's dark. It's like nothing else I've seen. Niall and Ruben are inextricably linked each forming half of a whole complicated man. They are both good, bad, and in between. Their fates intertwined, they careen toward something we suspect is coming for them both. Told over decades, Half-Man shows how micro-aggressions, lack of a safe space, and abuse take their toll on the mind, body, and soul. Disfunction at every turn on the highway of life, there's no escape for these two souls who are also their own worst enemies. Just when they might find an offramp, both make bad choices, give in to compulsions, and choose secrecy over the freedom that comes with truth telling. It's a cautionary tale that also highlights challenges gay men face. Some such challenges are well known -- societal acceptance, prejudice, and pressures. Others are not frequently discussed in media -- chemsex and internalized homophobia. But the gay angle only provides some of the threads in this tapestry. The real crux is identity. Who am I? Who are you? And who are we when we're together? Niall and Ruben aren't linked just because of circumstances, they fill in gaps in the other. Niall is more confident with Ruben's bravado on display while Ruben needs to feel he's not alone. This dependency is its own form of cancer. While we can't save them, we can learn from their mistakes. Honesty is the best policy. Seek help when needed. Cut toxic people out of your life. Niall and Ruben may only ever reach half their potential, but the message is that we can achieve more.
- BrandiJune 4, 2026This probably deserves an extra star than what I gave it, I might have to come back to this. The character Neil just made me so mad at times! Especially this final episode, WTH? I suppose it was written to bring out that emotion, but I just can't believe someone would be so stupid. It's just left me so annoyed.
