Season 1 follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past, and Candleford, the small market town bustling into the future. Seen through the eyes of young Laura, their inhabitants endure many upheavals and struggles as the inexorably change comes; their stories by turns poignant, spirited and uplifting.

Episode 1When a new baby in the family, teenage daughter Laura is forced to find a job. Laura moves to Candleford as an apprentice to her cousin Dorcas, the postmistress. Trouble is brewing between Lark Rise and Candleford, however.

Episode 2Laura is getting settled when Mrs Macey's husband finds a way out of prison which becomes hot gossip in town. Caroline has to go to court and possibly debtor's prison, something Laura's father is trying to avoid.

Episode 3Widow Old Amos announces that he has decided to get married again to his maid Patty. His friends are worried that she is just marrying him for his money. Robert manages to upset his family and the residents of the village when he refuses to let his children sing a song in praise of the Tories at the local church concert.

Episode 4A debt-collector looks to send Caroline Arless to debtors' prison. A mysterious man comes looking for his daughters. Dorcas shows Laura her dead letter box, including many letters written to the Pratt sisters under their previous names.

Episode 5A no-nonsense postal inspector arrives in Candleford for the annual inspection. Church duties interfere with work regulations. Laura misplaces the Pratt sisters' much-anticipated parcel. Lady Midwinter thinks she might be pregnant.

Episode 6After Robert does a charitable act taking in a family, he ends up caring for a young child. Zillah and Lady Adelaide end up wanting to become foster parents which makes life harder for Sir Timothy. Elsewhere, Thomas becomes unsettled when his devotion for Miss Ellison goes unanswered.

Episode 7Sam Braby is under the influence of alcohol and attacks his wife which makes Emma take it upon herself to help him quit. Elsewhere, the bond between Dorcas and Sir Timothy is starting to get on Lady Adelaide's nerves.

Episode 8Candleford plays host to a new school headmaster who brings new opportunities for the residents, but also brings their old culture back to life. Sir Timothy is not pleased though as Dorcas has taken a liking to the new guy.

Episode 9Caroline is back to prove she's a changed woman after her stint in jail, Dorcas is stumped over a piece of embroidery, and Edmund is hurt whilst poaching. Has karma come back to get him?

Episode 10Twister is taken ill after searching for Edmund. Dorcas announces the sale of the post office to travel abroad. Philip rats out Robert after a spat with Laura. Caroline is determined not to have her baby until her husband returns home.
