"Once upon a time ... the Americas" tells us the story of this vast continent, from the very first inhabitants to the present day, including the Aztecs and the Incas, the conquistadors, the war of independence or the gold Rush. Through our usual sympathetic heroes (Maestro, Pierrot, Petit Gros, le Teigneux, le Nabot, etc.), we travel from time to time, always with the aim of teaching us something.

This was education wrapped in adventure, Maestro’s beard flowing, Pierrot asking questions and history unfolding like a bedtime story with maps and moral lessons. Once Upon a Time... The Americas didn’t just teach dates and names, it made the continent feel alive. From the first nomads to the Aztecs, conquistadors and gold rush dreamers, every episode was a time capsule with heart. Watching it as a kid meant learning without realizing it. The characters were familiar, the tone was gentle but serious and the visuals stylized but rich, made complex events feel understandable. It didn’t shy away from colonialism, conflict, or injustice, but it framed them in ways that sparked empathy and curiosity. The Dutch dub added its own flavor and the pacing was perfect for young minds: slow enough to follow, rich enough to remember. It was school on TV, but the kind you actually wanted to watch.
