Even before the opening, the paintings pique the interest of Ester von Steinhof, an American Jewish woman who travels to Vienna specifically to clarify her inheritance claim to two of the works. A scandal erupts at the vernissage: Dr. Manfred Reichelt, the lawyer she has retained, skillfully provokes the crowd, thereby winning the press over to his client's side. Although Mrs. von Steinhof does not approve of this tactic, it certainly achieves its intended effect—after all, various restitution claims regarding "Aryanized" looted art continue to occupy lawyers and courts to this very day. All the evidence that Detective Brinkmann and his team uncover points to Myriam Ritgen, König's lover and sole heir, as the perpetrator. Myriam is remanded in custody, and the case would normally be closed for Brinkmann, but the young woman's despair haunts him. Against the wishes of his superior, Marbach, he continues his investigation with his assistants, Alice Bothe and Robert Wegener, and discovers that the murdered man's wife, Rita König, is far from innocent. And what role does Harry Hartung, an investment advisor who is likely more than just a good friend of the König family, play in this case? Er stellt den Wagen ab, läßt das Mädchen frei und entkommt. Die Kommissare Ritter und Stark finden die Kleine und stellen erstaunt fest, daß der Vater des Mädchens derjenige war, der die 3 Millionen DM in der Bank bestellt hatte. Das kann doch kein Zufall sein! Der Vater (Jochen Horst), ein amerikanischer Pelzhändler steht kurz vor der Pleite und dem Ende seiner Ehe. Er beschließt, seine Tochter in die USA zu entführen. Mit seiner Frau hat er einen massiven Streit, er wirft sie aus der Wohnung. Am nächsten Morgen ist das Mädchen verschwunden und ihr Vater liegt mit eingeschlagenem Schädel im Flur. Die Mutter hatte den Räuber ausfindig gemacht (dank einer zufälligen Entdeckung des Mädchens) und diesen beauftragt, ihren Mann zu erschlagen. Nun glaubt sie, der Räuber habe ihre Tochter entführt und bietet ihm Lösegeld an. In Aussicht auf Geld sagt dieser nichtsahnend zu. So macht sich die Frau mit 30.000 DM zum Übergabeort, ebenso wie Stark und Ritter, die das Mädchen mittlerweile gefunden haben. Es kommt zur Tragödie. - Bad BloodE15

While Bienzle tries to understand the world of the young people, he slowly grows closer to Hannelore again. Or perhaps she is growing closer to him.
