Where to Watch When Oranges Fall
- Jim Fox6d agoThis is difficult to review. For one, there is no new story here; it's 2025's "Boys In Love", just in the late 90's. It's your typical adolescent first-love story with added anxiety over graduation and staying together. But what makes this series shine (and for me to rate it so highly) is down to Progress (Ko 1) and his amazing acting skills; I swear, that boy can literally show ANY emotion you can name on his face! I could also really relate to his character, as the story is ultimately about someone who is terrified of change and relentlessly trying to hold on to his perfect "present" with his friend group and first love, Ko 2 (played well by Almond). Besides Progress making the series for me, there were some episodes that were pure perfection; episodes 5 and 6 I individually gave them 5 stars! If you don't mind an incredibly predictable story (with a happy ending), this series is definitely worth your time! Watch Progress' face in every scene and note how you can pause on any frame and perfectly know exactly the emotion he is portraying. As an aside, there was a lot of controversy about this series because of Justin Angus Moir (who played August) as he was fired by GMMTV during the airing of the series and not allowed at the wrap party. They found his old TikTok posts / reposts where he made some disparaging remarks about the LGBTQ+ community. Because of this, he was let go and - to his credit - he accepted the guilt and consequences publicly. He was only 15 when the series aired and probably even as young as 14 when he made or reposted those comments / videos, but despite his young age he wasn't given a pass because he is working in BL and can't be seen attacking the community. I'm of two minds over the whole ordeal. For one, how long are we going to hold young children accountable for stupid comments they make online when they are so naive and gullible? I'm grateful that I didn't spend my adolescence in the time of social media! I was very anti-LGBTQ+ (and I'm gay!) because of the religion I was raised in and too young to form my own opinions. I would hate to see the comments I would have posted if social media existed back then as it does now! However, on the other hand, a strong reaction like this sends the signal to everyone that any hateful rhetoric is NOT permissible and will be met with the harshest consequences. Perhaps if more hear this story, they will never consider it OK to write any homophobic / transphobic comments or to promote others' videos that do this, or risk their future. To me, the whole thing is tragic since Justin is very talented and also made this series for me. He was also really cute as a supporting character in "My Sweetheart Jom" playing the character Toey, which was one of the few bright points in a series I generally didn't like. I hope Justin can focus on his studies in the short term, and find a way back into the industry later. I hope people will be able to forgive him once he's further from the scandal. Something must be done about this, since old online comments are dragged up decades later to hurt people's prospects. I don't claim to know the solution, but it might take a paradigm shift for people to understand that past comments are a snapshot of thinking at that time, but not necessarily opinions that someone holds in the present. Justin - as a gay man I forgive you and I'm sorry for the loss of your career. I hope you can reflect, take it to heart, and come out stronger - and as an ally - in the future. Fingers crossed for you!
