An indredibly tense yet restrained film. Uses repetition, waiting and silence incredibly effectively to keep you on edge as well as very tight blocking to keep you in the dark as much as the characters are.

Adding this to my list titled "Old films everyone says are good and they're right to say it". Everything I knew about this film were still images, parody, and the game played with death. But my assumption of what it was, and the reality of what it is were far divorced.
For one, I did not expect the comedy in it, nor the tone of the film in general. Bergman explores faith very well here, and with a clear eye to humanity, the simple but exquisite joys of everyday life and the folly we make in search of meaning and place.
If you haven't watched The Seventh Seal because you expect a dour and oppressive slog then rethink that. It's a film that explores the best and worst of humanity, and the struggle for meaning we all face before we perform the dance of death.
Took a while to get going but really gripped me by the end. A really stunning exploration of faith, the meaning people take out of it and the way it can seperate and bind us.
