- Return to Silent Hill
It's heavily oriented on the video game Silent Hill 2, with some deviations. If you can look past those and take the movie for what it is, it's not a bad movie. I wish some things were a little clearer, but let's be honest, Silent Hill lives from its mysteries, so I'm fine with that. But just like with the game, you need to think about a lot of things to make sense of them. As for the sound: The previous movies had top sound design, but in music and in sound effects. For my personal taste this iteration falls a little short of that. It's not bad, just not quite as haunting as I wish it was. Visuals: The previous movies had incredible creature design and, most of all, presentation and exhibition. While we do see a lot of creatures, my inner creature fanatic wishes there was more of them to see. What we see is great, it's just not enough to feel the constant dread which to me is part of what makes Silent Hill special. The effects are okay but as with many modern movies, they just don't seem as flawless anymore. Especially the misty scenery just does not seem to fit in with the lighting and ambiance of the characters, meaning that it doesn't feel like they're really there. All in all I can recommend this movie. I'm afraid it won't take the place in my heart that I wish it would.Return to Silent Hill - Silent Hill: Revelation
This is a direct sequel to the first movie, so make sure to watch that first. They did another great job with this one. It further develops the story of the main antagonist of the first movie. However I feel the screenplay is a bit weaker this time around. Don't get me wrong, it is still phenomenal and brings back a lot of what I liked about the first movie, but the sense of sheer wonder is not quite there. Some scenes are quite short lived and don't feel like they bring much to the story, when I wished they did. Nonetheless, it is a great piece of art. The visual effects feel a bit weaker as well as the sound and music, just because it didn't trap me quite as well. But in the end I must recommend this movie, if you liked the first one.Silent Hill: Revelation - Silent Hill
It's a nightmare in the most amazing way, this might very well be my favorite horror movie. The story is unsettling, the creatures are haunting, the sounds and music are as surreal as the rest of movie, the acting is great, the sets and VFX look incredible. Silent Hill truly is a work of art and passion. Also there's quite a few references to the games for us nerds out there. But even without recognizing those it's still a masterpiece.Silent Hill - Smile
The acting was good but the story was just not interesting at all. When you already see the next "this isn't what's really happening" coming, there's just not much left to enjoy. The ending is anything but satisfying, it's just not even an actual ending other than the movie suddenly being over. No closure, no resolution, not even an interesting open end. Sting is a very good time. It's a more personal horror story where the characters and their stories play very well together with the horror they're facing. I wish the creature was a little bit more creative since it's supposed to be an extraterrestrial lifeform (this is shown in the intro so it's not a spoiler in my books) but it's fine, it's always a pleasure to see what the little guy is up to next. The fear of the unknown is a huge part in every horror piece, but it's pretty much thrown out of the window in this one, so I never really felt like I'm watching a super serious morale-questioning masterpiece, and that's perfectly fine. It is a great time. The quality of sound and VFX is great, but since I'm a sucker for creatures and this one is kinda lacking I gotta give it a 4. But still: watch this movie!Sting - The Wretched
I quite like the personal stories. It's just that nothing really catches on. The baddie doesn't seem to be well thought out. It's being teased like it has a bigger goal and a personality and special abilities, but then it's just a creature, and nothing seems to have anything to do with anything. The progression of the main character seemed well put together so it's a shame that it just doesn't lead to anything. The production is pretty good. Visuals and sound are fitting, the pacing made me wish for a deeper plot. Overall rather disappointing.The Wretched - It Feeds
An intriguing story which falls short of being something really good, but it's still very enjoyable. While everything is made quite well it becomes pretty clear that this movie doesn't leave a whole lot to the imagination, the viewer is basically being carried through everything, which is something I'm struggling to enjoy in horror movies. That's why I'd rather categorize this as bloody mystery. It's light to watch, the fear of the unknown is not very present, and the story is more about a struggle to get to the goal instead of finding out what the goal even is. The facial expressions in the acting are sometimes a bit too excessive, which is a shame because that's rarely the case, but often enough to break the immersion. The story has potential, but some parts do not make sense and it feels like they're being justified with "you don't need to know, she's a psychic so just accept it". Which plays into what I meant when I said earlier that it's not about finding the goal, but getting to it. It's not a bad movie per se, it's still worth a watch. It's just that the feeling of dread never comes up.It Feeds - Weapons
Something drives the children from a single school class to run off into the darkness in the middle of the night, except for one boy. The class teacher struggles to get through this situation. Something mysterious is going on. The movie tells the story by showing what various characters experience, which is very interesting. The story in itself is intriguing, even though it has another one of those "kid with adult choices" thing going on. There are also a couple of comedic scenes. But that's fine, the movie is a good time. It's not made to be gruesome dark horror, it's more of a supernatural mystery horror, and it does that quite well. Visuals, sounds, music, actors, it's all playing together very well. The scale isn't large enough to make this a big player in the genre, but it is definitely worth a watch. Watch it! Definitely watch the first movie first. But then watch this one. Like the first one, it's beautiful. Great sound design, great CGI, and I just love the creature design, totes my thing. Characters and actors are great. My personal preference tells me to only give this 4.5 stars due to the suburban setting which is just not the most enjoyable to me.A Quiet Place: Day One - A Quiet Place
An excellent horror movie. The tension is always there. The sound effects are awesome which is important since the plot revolves around sound, and it makes this a very unique experience. The characters are very human and relatable. The visual effects are flawless, CGI on point. This movie makes for an intense evening, loved every minute of it.
