Where to Watch The Spectacular Now
- I expected The Spectacular Now to settle into the familiar rhythm most romance dramas eventually follow. Instead, James Ponsoldt seems far more interested in the flaws his characters carry than the relationship itself. Miles Teller gives Sutter just enough charm to explain why everyone is drawn to him while quietly revealing the insecurity beneath the confidence. Shailene Woodley is every bit Teller's equal. She could have effortlessly played the cliché popular girl, yet she disappears into Aimee, becoming the kind of shy, bookish classmate that everyone had in their homeroom. Brie Larson understands exactly what Cassidy needs to be: the relationship that's over but never completely leaves you, always existing somewhere in the corner of your mind and even at times coming up and asking you to dance. With that said, I never found Sutter's relationship with Cassidy quite as convincing, largely because the film spends more time telling us what they once meant to each other than allowing us to see or feel it ourselves. By contrast, every awkward conversation and uncertain decision between Sutter and Aimee lands with surprising honesty. The film's greatest strength is its refusal to force these characters through the usual romantic milestones. Rather than steering every conflict toward a tidy emotional payoff, it accepts that growing up often means leaving difficult conversations unfinished and uncomfortable truths unresolved. Miles Teller gives an incredibly empathetic performance, finding remarkable depth beneath Sutter's outward confidence without ever asking the audience to excuse his flaws. I did think the film occasionally struggled to move along more than it needed to, causing the middle stretch to lose some momentum. Overall, though, The Spectacular Now succeeds because it understands that young love isn't always about sticking with who you think is the right person. Sometimes it's about becoming someone capable of loving another person in the first place.
